The One

The funny thing about the past is that it just won’t be undone

But I’m just a simple-hearted, hopeless fool, looking for the one

I thought we were on our way to Austin

But the love train broke on down between El Paso and Fort Stockton

Tried to make a home in South Georgia miles from sea

We couldn’t keep the waves from crashing down on our reverie

Would have followed her all the way to Boston

But the cold cobblestone streets weren’t the only things we were lost in

Could have made a go in Tampa by the Bay

But we were running long on lies and short of things to say

Left wondering, where has the time gone?

Alone oh why?

But when it comes down to it baby

I’d rather laugh than cry

Because the funny thing about the past is that it just won’t be undone

No matter how hard you try

To explain the circumstances for

The things you may have done

But I’ll tell you anything you want to know

My life’s and open book

There may be a little dust on the cover

But the story's worth a second look

Despite the misadventures

There’s good deeds left yet done

I’m just a simple hearted, hopeless fool

Who’s been looking for the one

So I looked for love in a bag of cocaine

The bottom of a liquor bottle labeled with countless names

In little blue and white pills that say your gonna feel no more pain

But you're left wondering

Where has the time gone?

Alone oh why?

But when it comes down to it baby

You better learn to laugh or your gonna cry

(Because) the funny thing about the past is that it just won’t be undone

No matter how hard you try

To explain the circumstances for

The circles that you may have run

But I’ll tell you anything you want to know

My life’s and open book

There may be a little dust on the cover

But the story's worth a second look

Despite the misadventures

There’s good deeds left yet done

I’m just a simple-hearted, hopeless fool

Who’s been looking for the one

The funny thing about the past is that it just won’t be undone

No matter how hard you try

To explain the circumstances for

The circles that you may have run

But I’ll tell you anything you want to know

My life’s and open book

There may be a little dust on the cover

But the stories worth a second look

Despite the misadventures

And the good deeds left yet done

Ain’t enough to keep this simple-hearted, hopeless fool

From hoping you’re the one
